In Roman Times, it was costum to bestow lands on the most faithful and valiant legionaries, in order, to establish roman rule and civilization in the conquered territories. The ancient name “ Ager Bebianus” refers to the name to the roman Family “Bebii”, who through the times became one of the most important families in Reggio Emilia; they was named “ Counts”, led the guelph party of the city and moved the centre of their interests to the surrounding hills, becoming feudal Lords of the Castle of Bebbio and lending their name to the village itself. They set in order the feud of Barco, giving it the characteristic shape of closed Lombard Court, still existing today, which makes “ Corte Bebbi” a “unicum” in the area.Meanwhile in Reggio Emilia, as in many other cities, the “ Mont-de –Pietè” was created, in order, to help the poor and many important families enriched it with gifts and endowments. The Counts Bebbi endow the Mont with the Barco Estate (on the pillars of both Courts one can still see, carved in marble, the Mont’s shield) until the Mont was taken over by the Cassa di Risparmio of Reggio Emilia which, in time, lost interest in its agricultural estates and decided to sell both Courts called “Bebbi grande” and “Bebbi piccolo”.The present owner, Count Morini Mazzoli, descendent of the Counts Bebbi, bought them in 1996. The restauration has been carried out with the utmost accuracy and attention to details and in total respect of the style of the property. After six years one can see the excellent result of the restoration of all the buildings.
